FAQ

Thirty-seven questions about choosing and integrating laser rangefinder modules, checking model documentation, and arranging samples and orders. Specifications and commercial terms depend on the model and project.

R&D & technology

What is the laser safety class of a 905 nm module?

Check the laser-safety declaration for the exact model and supplied configuration. Where a class is stated in the technical document, it is a module declaration; it does not establish third-party certification or the classification of the assembled equipment. Where no class is published, request the applicable documentation before evaluation.

“Eye-safe” is a separate claim and one we do not make. The phrase conventionally refers to wavelengths above roughly 1.4 µm, where the cornea absorbs the beam before it reaches the retina; 905 nm is below that, and we never use it unqualified on this site — our own article on 905 nm and IEC 60825-1 sets out why.

905 nm, 940 nm or another wavelength — which do I need?

Wavelength follows from the complete measurement and integration requirement, and each model states its own. This catalog includes 905 nm modules and LRF10VB, whose V3.0 datasheet specifies 940 nm. Range, dimensions, interface and operating conditions are model-specific.

What is DToF, and how does it differ from triangulation or phase-based ranging?

DToF means direct time-of-flight: distance is derived from the travel time of an emitted pulse and its return. Other ranging methods use different measurement principles. Compare the stated method and performance conditions in each model’s documentation rather than assuming a method guarantees a particular range or accuracy.

What do the minimum and maximum ranging distances mean for my target?

Minimum range is the lower end of the model’s specified measuring interval. Read maximum range with the source conditions, including object size, reflectivity and visibility where stated. Keep separate daytime and nighttime figures distinct. Check the datasheet, then evaluate with your intended object and environment.

How accurate are the modules, and does accuracy change with distance?

Accuracy is model-specific and can use different distance bands. For example, LRF3000A1 specifies ±0.7 m at d ≤ 100 m and ±(0.7 + 0.003·d) m above 100 m, with d in meters. Use the formula, units and conditions published for the model you are evaluating.

What interface and supply voltage do the modules use?

Supply voltage, signal logic level, pinout, baud rate and protocol are separate specifications and they do not move together. LRF10VB specifies 4.5–5.5 V DC, so a universal 3.3–5 V assumption is incorrect. The interface figures that apply to your unit are the ones on its own model page and in its delivered configuration.

What is measurement frequency, and how is it different from response time?

Measurement frequency describes the rate of measurements in a stated mode. Start-up time and time to the first result are separate specifications where published. Check the timing and command sequence for the exact version rather than applying a common frequency, adaptive mode or start-up delay to the whole catalog.

What causes a missed or false reading, and how is it minimized?

Object surface, alignment and environment can all affect the result. Each model documents its own range conditions and its own status or error responses, and those are the performance figures that apply to it. When you ask us about unreliable readings, the model, settings and test conditions are what let us answer.

Choosing a module

How do I choose between the LR, SPD, A, VB and H series?

The choice starts with the required distance and object conditions, then accuracy, dimensions, weight, power, interface and environment. Family names are navigation aids, not a substitute for specifications. The model catalog narrows the options; the individual product pages carry the numbers the decision turns on.

Which module fits a night-vision or thermal clip-on?

It comes down to available space, mass, optical layout, power and required range. SPD1200N0, for example, publishes an approximately 5 g weight and a Ø15.7 mm × 21.3 mm cylindrical body. Those dimensions do not establish compatibility with a particular host device; send us the constraints and we will review them against a specific model.

Which module fits a UAV or drone gimbal?

It depends on the measurement purpose, object conditions, vibration environment, mass and power limits, interface and required update rate. SPD1200S2G lists an integrated gyroscope, but its complete communication protocol still needs confirmation. A listed sensor feature does not establish suitability for a flight-control function; the complete application and the delivered configuration are what decide it.

Do I need Class 1, or can I use a higher laser class for more range?

Check the exact model’s laser-safety field and technical document. A class stated in a module manual is a source declaration, not proof of third-party certification or the classification of the assembled equipment. Where no class is published, request the applicable documentation.

What that designation is: a manufacturer declaration taken from the model manual. No third-party IEC 60825-1 classification report exists for any model — the only two third-party documents we hold are the ISO 9001 certificate and a 2022 EMC Declaration of Conformity, and neither is a laser-safety document. Class 1 as stated in the model manual; the finished-equipment assessment is separate, and it is yours.

How do I compare range figures across models when they use different reference conditions?

Only like for like. The reference object, reflectivity, size, visibility and whether a nighttime figure is separate all differ between models, and the qualifying conditions are published on the model page and in the source document. Where a condition is not stated, it is not safe to assume it matches another model — ask us instead.

Can one module cover both day and night ranging reliably?

Day and night range figures and operating modes are published per model, and they differ. A longer nighttime figure, where published, is not a guarantee for your own object or lighting. The answer for your product comes from evaluating the chosen model under the lighting conditions it will encounter.

What is the smallest or lightest module you make, and what is the trade-off?

The trade-off is size and mass against range. LRF10VB lists 1 g and 12 × 7.5 × 9.1 mm, with a 0.05–9 m range at 90% reflectivity. SPD1200N0 lists approximately 5 g and a 0.2–1,200 m measuring range. These serve different measurement requirements, so the lighter option is not automatically the better fit.

Manufacturing & quality

What certifications do the modules carry?

Two third-party documents are on file and shown on the About page: an ISO 9001:2015 quality-management-system certificate (no. 02825Q11586R0S, issued to 铒迪科技(成都)有限公司 / ERDI TECH LTD by Beijing Zhong An Zhi Huan Certification Center, valid 19 May 2025 to 18 May 2028, scope: R&D and sales of optoelectronic devices including laser rangefinders) and an EMC Declaration of Conformity to 2014/30/EU (EN IEC 61326-1:2021, document HPT-220930L0044, Shenzhen Huapin Testing Technology, October 2022) that names specific rangefinder models. Each module’s laser class is stated on its product page. Request the current documents for the exact model and intended use, and check the named entity, models covered, dates and scope: a company quality-management certificate and a model’s EMC or laser-safety document answer different questions, and neither is blanket certification for every product or final assembly.

Is every unit tested before it ships?

Any inspection, calibration and acceptance records you need belong in the inquiry, including a requirement for an individual calibration report. The test scope and the documents available for your model and order should be confirmed in writing before purchase.

Is your production in-house, or outsourced?

In-house, for these five steps: assembly, optical alignment, calibration, functional verification and final acceptance. The published quality chain runs materials and coatings → pulsed laser source → range measurement chain → electro-mechanical integration → final acceptance, and the release record for a unit carries its configuration ID, its functional sequence and its inspection result. The photos and the assembly film are on About ERDILRF.

Two things we are not claiming.

Not published: whether the housings are machined here or bought in. We will answer it for a named project rather than guess on a web page.

And our ISO 9001:2015 certificate covers R&D and sales of optoelectronic devices, not manufacturing; it is a management-system certificate, not a factory certification, and we do not present it as one.

If your sourcing process needs a facility audit, say so in your inquiry and we will scope it.

How should we define and review a custom module project?

A custom module project starts from the application, measurement conditions, interface, mechanical constraints and acceptance criteria. Feasibility, documents, sample evaluation and production scope are then reviewed against those. Development stages, deliverables and revision arrangements should be agreed for the project.

What environmental and shock/vibration testing do the modules pass?

Environmental, sealing, shock and vibration figures are stated for the exact model and revision, with their own scope and test conditions. A lens-cavity protection rating is not automatically a rating for a complete enclosure. Where a figure or test report is not published, confirm it with us before it goes into your qualification plan.

Can I get per-unit test data or a calibration certificate?

Availability, format and scope need confirmation for the model and order. Name the records you require — serial-linked measurement results, a calibration document — in your inquiry, and ask for product-specific evidence wherever your qualification process requires it.

How reliable are the modules — what is the expected MTBF?

A reliability or MTBF figure applies only where it is published for the exact model, and only with the test conditions stated alongside it. Reliability figures and warranty terms should be reviewed separately. Where reliability evidence is required, ask for the supporting scope and documentation before ordering.

Customization & ordering

What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ)?

Request the minimum order quantity for the exact model and configuration. Sample availability, quantity and price are confirmed in the written quotation; a missing published price must not be treated as a one-piece price commitment.

Customization is the exception: appearance, structure or output protocol changes are scoped per project, and a custom build may carry its own minimum. Send the change you need with your expected annual volume.

What are sample lead time and cost?

Sample pricing, minimum quantity where applicable, shipping charges and lead time are confirmed in the written quotation for the chosen model and configuration.

Not published: the sample lead time. We do not have a standard sample lead time we are willing to publish as a commitment, so we are not going to imply one. Send the model, quantity and destination and you get a date in writing with the quotation.

Do you offer OEM / ODM customization?

Yes. A feasibility review starts from the changes you need and the intended quantity. Available options, engineering scope, costs, documentation and sample-to-production arrangements must be confirmed for the model and project.

Can you customize the interface, baud rate or output frame?

Feasibility and the delivered protocol must be confirmed for the project, against the required interface, signal levels, baud rate, command frames and measurement modes, together with the model and host system. The protocol that applies is the one agreed for the delivered configuration.

Can you customize the mechanical envelope or connector?

Whether a standard model can be modified, and what verification that requires, is reviewed and confirmed for the project before a custom design is agreed. The review needs the available envelope, mounting requirements, connector needs and drawings.

Do you support logo engraving and custom packaging for OEM products?

Availability, sample approval, costs and minimum quantities for branding or packaging are confirmed in the quotation. The artwork, marking location, packaging requirements and quantity belong in the inquiry.

What information do you need to give an accurate quote for a custom module?

An accurate quote needs the application, object and measurement conditions, range and accuracy, interface, mechanical or weight limits, environment, quantity and destination. The requirement field on the inquiry form takes what you know and the questions still open. Detailed project and contact fields are optional.

How do I get pricing?

Where a reference unit price is published, it appears on the exact model page. Models without a published price require a quotation. Send the model, configuration, quantity and destination to ERDILRF for volume pricing and written commercial terms.

A reference unit price applies only to the identified model and configuration; it does not establish a volume discount schedule or include shipping by implication. The written quotation confirms quantity, shipping charges, tax treatment and Incoterm.

Delivery & support

Can you export and ship internationally?

Shipment availability, applicable documentation and delivery terms must be reviewed for the model and order before confirmation, and that review needs the destination and the intended civilian use.

What warranty and support do you provide?

Support: direct, from the engineers who calibrate the modules, within one business day, Chengdu time (UTC+8).

Not published: the warranty period. Every competitor you are comparing us against states a period publicly and we currently do not, which is a gap on our side rather than a policy. The warranty, return eligibility and support scope that apply to your order are in your written quotation — ask for them before you place it, and hold us to them.

What happens if a unit arrives defective or fails in the field?

The next steps, return arrangements and repair or replacement terms are reviewed against your order and confirmed in writing, from the model, serial or order reference, symptoms and test conditions. Nothing should be shipped back to us before the return arrangements are agreed.

What documentation ships with a sample or production order?

The downloads on each individual model page are the starting point, and what ships with an order is confirmed for that order rather than assumed from a common sample package. Which manual revision, protocol information, software and cables are included is part of that confirmation, so list any additional documentation or accessories you need for evaluation.

Do you provide an integration manual and configuration tool?

Available manuals, protocol details and tools differ by model. Check its product-page downloads, then request any missing item by model and revision. Ask for the protocol revision and any configuration software you need before evaluation.

Who do I talk to for technical support after I’ve integrated a module?

Tommy Yu, through the inquiry form or tommy@erdimail.com. The model, order reference, firmware or document revision if known, the issue and test conditions all shorten the round trip. The applicable support scope follows the written terms for your order.

What shipping terms and lead times should I expect for a production order?

Production availability and lead time depend on the model, quantity and agreed configuration. Provide the destination and required date so shipping arrangements and trade terms can be confirmed in writing with the quotation.

Still have a question?

Send your model or application, required range and accuracy, interface, quantity and open questions. Include the document revision when asking about a specification or protocol.
