A short-range single-point DToF (direct time-of-flight) sensor is worth evaluating when an industrial fixture or robot needs a distance reading along a defined viewing direction. Start with the nearest and farthest surfaces, allowed error and installation conditions. A maximum-range headline cannot answer those questions.
Have a measurement task in mind? Send ERDILRF a measurement brief with your working distances, surface and lighting conditions, allowed error and host interface. Include the model and document revision if you already have a candidate.
One distance channel or an area to observe?
A fixed single-point installation can be evaluated for a known surface or position, such as a workpiece at a repeatable location. It does not by itself produce a surrounding map. For a moving robot, define which surfaces must be detected, from which directions and with what response time. Evaluate the complete sensing arrangement, including the host’s response to missing, delayed or invalid data, before relying on it for obstacle detection.
Check minimum range separately from accuracy
A documented minimum range is a lower measurement boundary, not a promise of precision near that boundary. Compare it separately with the error specification and the physical clearance in your design. Check both against the applicable document revision before selecting a module.
These two models illustrate the questions to resolve before committing a design:
| Model | Confirm before selection |
|---|---|
| SPD1200S2G | Available source documents disagree on some range, refresh-rate, mechanical and interface details. Confirm the document revision and configuration applicable to the delivered unit. |
| SPD1200D03 | The technical table and protocol section give inconsistent baud-rate information. Confirm the delivered unit’s serial setting before configuring the host. |
Compare model-specific records
For compact DToF candidates, start with the current LRF22VB and LRF50VB product records. For an H-series candidate, review LRF50H. Compare the published target conditions, interface, supply and output-rate information for the exact model. These links are starting points for evaluation, not confirmation that a sensor fits a particular robot or safety function.
Use the full ERDILRF product catalog to compare other families. For a current datasheet or configuration review, contact tommy@erdimail.com or send a measurement brief.
Test the actual surface and installation
Source documentation identifies reflectivity, reflective area, incidence angle, sunlight and atmospheric conditions as factors affecting ranging capability and response. A result from a large surface facing the sensor cannot be assumed to apply to a small, dark or angled workpiece.
Include the closest and farthest required distances, representative surfaces, expected lighting and intended mounting geometry in your sample test. If the design adds a cover window, include it in the evaluation. Record these conditions with each run so that a successful reading can be reproduced.
Confirm the electrical interface and packet format
UART does not establish a shared command set across the catalog. Before connecting a controller or USB adapter, confirm the connector view, pin assignment, signal logic levels, supply requirements, enable behavior, baud rate and packet definition. The supply-voltage range does not establish what every signal pin accepts.
For SPD1200S2G, obtain confirmation of the UART logic level: it is not specified in the available records reviewed here. For SPD1200D03, apply the separately documented transmit and receive checksum rules. A familiar frame header alone does not establish parser compatibility.
Keep raw serial bytes alongside decoded readings during bring-up. Check status fields, field lengths, scaling and checksums. Treat malformed frames or invalid measurements separately from valid distance data, and resolve unclear fields before using them in control logic.
Measure timing and power in the intended mode
Check whether the quoted measurement rate is fixed or adaptive. Measure first-valid-reading delay, intervals between valid readings and interruptions under your conditions. Set the host’s data-age limits from the application’s needs and observed behavior.
For power planning, obtain startup, operating and idle-mode information, then measure the intended duty cycle. Do not infer sleep consumption or battery runtime from a typical operating figure. Compare specific candidates within the complete host design when assessing power, cost and complexity.
Make the sample test answer a design question
Agree the pass criteria before testing, then keep a compact evaluation record:
- Distance and error: compare readings with an independent reference across the required working interval.
- Conditions: record surfaces, lighting, installation geometry and any cover window.
- Timing and data: retain raw records, valid-reading intervals and the host’s response to unavailable data.
- Configuration: record the module identity, document revision, settings and installation photographs.
A serial-terminal demonstration is a useful first step. Complete the conditions and failure cases your application requires before committing the mechanical or electrical design.
Discuss your measurement requirement
Send your industrial or robotics measurement task to ERDILRF. Start with distances, surface conditions, allowed error and host interface. Add the required reading rate, space or power limits, evaluation quantity and timing where known. Leave unknowns open so the review can identify document gaps and define a useful sample evaluation.
